Autism is a mission deeply personal to us through our journey with Akhil, and it filled my

heart with joy to see it reflected so powerfully in a play at Natya Darpan

Ujaan at the prestigious Natya Darpan was met with thunderous applause at every

scene—proof that true art knows no language. Though performed in Bengali, the

powerful story on autism touched every heart in the audience. What an overwhelming,

humbling, and heart-filling experience!

Deep gratitude to Mahua Sen Mukhopadhyay for scripting such a moving story, Sankha

Bhowmick for your brilliant direction, and Ashok Chaudhary ji for the opportunity.

Honored to present the trophy to the director and to witness such a meaningful moment

for autism on stage. Bravo to team Ujaan!

"लेखकाचा कुत्रा" ह्या आमच्या नाटकाचा प्रयोग

"लेखकाचा कुत्रा" ह्या आमच्या नाटकाचा प्रयोग होण्याआधीच्या "आगामी" पोस्ट्स आणि होऊन गेल्यानंतरची काही क्षणचित्रं हा गेल्या दीडेक वर्षांपासून अंगवळणी पडलेला विषय. गावोगावी होत

असणार्‍या प्रयोगांपैकी, परवाचा, न्यू जर्सीमधला आमचा एकंदर प्रवासातला ६वा प्रयोग.

जिथे जिथे प्रयोग झाला, तिथे नाटकाला भरपूर प्रेम मिळालं आहे. अमेरिकेच्या पूर्व

किनार्‍यावरच्या नाट्यपंढरीत झालेला प्रयोग हाही अपवाद ठरला नाही. टाळ्या आणि कौतुक,

अनेक लोकांनी आवर्जून भेटून सांगितलेले प्रेमाचे चार शब्द. त्यातले बहुतेक अनोळखी लोक.

मित्रांनो, कला लोकांना आवडली असेल, मुख्य म्हणजे ती खरी वाटत असेल तर कुणी ओळखीचं

असो, नसो, तो माणूस आपोआप जोडला जातो. ह्याचा प्रत्यय आम्हा "लेखकाचा कुत्रा" च्या

टीमइतका चांगला आलाय, की ही आयुष्याची तिजोरी बनू पाहते आहे. नाटकातली पात्रं जणू

प्रेक्षकांच्या मनातली वाक्यं बोलतात. त्यातला खवचटपणा लोकांना एकीकडे आवडतो, दुसरीकडे

त्याचा रागही येतो. त्यातल्या निरागसतेने लोक मान डोलवतात, हेलावतात. दोनच पात्रं - तेही

पुरुष. त्यांच्यातलं ४५ मिनिटे घडलेलं नाट्य.

ही बंदिश दरवेळी जमते. आम्ही स्टेजवरचे नि स्टेजमागचे लोक ती मनापासून रचतात आणि ४५

मिनिटांचा हा ख्याल समोरच्या चारशे-पाचशे प्रेक्षकांना सफरीवर नेऊन आणतो. जहाज परत

किनार्‍यावर येतं तेव्हा लक्षांत येतं : समोरचे शेकडो लोक केव्हाच जहाजावर आले होते आणि

आमच्याबरोबर लाटांवर हेलकावत होते, सचैल भिजत होतेच पण जेव्हा जेव्हा मोठमोठ्या लाटा

येऊन जातात तेव्हा त्यांच्या तोंडून उत्स्फूर्तपणे उद्गार निघत होते, हात टाळ्या वाजवत होते.

क्वचित थोड्या शिट्ट्याही.

"लेखकाचा कुत्रा" चे लेखक विशाल कदम, तो हक्क मला मिळवून देणारा सन्मित्र प्रणव जोशी.

आजन्म कृतज्ञता.

आणि सहकलाकार, दिग्दर्शक, तंत्रज्ञ, संगीत-प्रकाशाने उजळवणारे आमचे साथी. कुणी कुणाचे

आभार मानायचे? किती मानायचे? हे सरता संपत नाही, चांदणे कृतज्ञतेचे, ऋणांचे.

प्रस्तुत पोस्ट नेहमी प्रमाणे आमच्या छोट्याशा, लोकांना आवडत असलेल्या एकांकिकेबद्दल

आहेच. पण थोडं अधिक लिहितो, न्यू जर्सीच्या श्री. अशोक चौधरी ह्यांच्याबद्दल. त्यांच्या

नाट्यदर्पण ह्या महोत्सवाचं हे १० वं वर्ष. त्या निमित्ताने २ दिवसांच्या ह्या महोत्सवात

"लेखकाचा कुत्रा" ची निवड झाली होती.

अशोक चौधरी त्यांचे डझनावारी सहकारी आणि नाट्यदर्पण ह्यांचं मोल अनमोल आहे. नाटक

करणारे करतात, पाहाणारे पाहून जातात. काही नाटकं जमतात, काही नाही. पण एकही नाटक

स्वतः न बसवता सतत १० वर्षं अमेरिकेतली उत्तमोत्तम नाटकं निवडण्याची प्रक्रिया घडवत

राहायचं आणि प्रचंड कष्ट करून, त्याकरता खस्ता खाऊन वर्षभर राबायचं. कशाकरता?

कोपर्‍याकोपर्‍यात असलेल्या नाट्यप्रेमी लोकांनी एकत्र येऊन, दरवर्षी येणार्‍या ४०-४५ नाटकांमधली

सर्वात चांगली वाटतील अशी नाटकं लोकांपर्यंत पोचावीत म्हणून.

कोण करतं असं आजकाल?

अशोक चौधरी ह्यांच्यामधला सज्जनपणा, चांगुलपणा, कलेची आंच आणि त्याकरता वाटेल

त्याच्याकडून वाटेल ते ऐकून घेण्याची तयारी, डझनावारी लोकांना हाताशी धरून शंभरेक

कलाकारांचा सोहळा हाउसफुल्ल ऑडिटोरियममधे भरवायची खटपट. "चौधरींसारखा तुकाराम बनता

आलं नाही तरी चालेल निदान आपण मंबाजी तरी नको बनायला."हेच मी स्वतःला बजावत

असतो.

दरवर्षीप्रमाणे यंदाही जमतील ती सर्व नाटकं पाहिली. (दरवर्षी सगळी बघतो. यंदा आपलंच नाटक

असल्याने ८ पैकी चारच पहाता आली.)

जी पाहिली - सर्व खरंच छान होती. सर्वांकडून शिकण्यासारखं खूप आहे. प्रत्येक नाटकाबद्दल

लिहू गेलो तर इतकीच मोठी दुसरी पोस्ट होईल.

पण एका नाटकाबद्दल फार लिहावं वाटतं. ते माझ्या अल्प समजुतीप्रमाणे लिहितोय.

दिवंगत नाट्यकर्मी चेतन दातार ह्यांनी लिहिलेल्या "सावल्या" नाटकाचा प्रयोग पाहिला. त्याचे

कलाकार, दिग्दर्शक, निर्माते ह्यांची माझी ओळख नव्हती. जी होती ती अगदी जुजबी.

१९८०च्या दशकातत घडणारं कथानक. परिस्थितीशी झगडणारं एक कुटुंब. कुटुंबात आणि पर्यायाने

नाटकातही, एकही पुरुष पात्र नाही. एक आज्जी आणि तिच्या ३ नाती. वेगवेगळ्या वयाच्या,

जगण्याच्या वेगवेगळ्या टप्प्यावरच्या. त्यांच्या जीवनाचा एक तुकडा. बस्स.

नाटक पाहिलं तर लक्षात येत होतं की चेतन दातारने हे कुठंतरी स्वतः पाहिलंय, जे पाहिलंय ते

फक्त टिपलंय.

कलेचा, साहित्याचा, संस्कृतीचा एकंदर प्रवास हाच जर का "साहित्याकडून सत्याकडे" असतो असं

मानलं तर "सावल्या"चा हा प्रयोग माझ्याकरता त्या निकषावर खरा ठरला. चारही अभिनेत्रींनी

फार चांगलं काम केलं होतं. प्रकाशयोजना, नेपथ्य, आणि संगीत अर्थपूर्ण होतं. (एक गालबोट :

व्हॉल्युम लेव्हल फार कमी होती. संवाद फार कष्टपूर्वक ऐकावे लागले. )

नाटक पाहाताना अनेक क्षण आले ज्यातून गळ्यात आवंढा आला. मात्र एक क्षण असा आला की

... असं वाटलं की बापरे, हे नाटक आता मानगुटीवर चढून भुतासारखं गळा धरेल. प्रसंग इतकाच

आहे, की रात्रीच्या वेळी आजी आणि तीन्ही नाती झोपताएत. झोपाझोप होते आहे. आणि

झोपताना आजी आणि तिघींच्या मनातले विचार स्वगतासारखे बाहेर ऐकू येताएत. बापरे. एकाच

खोलीत राहाणार्‍या आणि परिस्थितीशी झगडणार्‍या, कधीही आशेचा तंतू तुटेल अशा टोकाच्या

परिस्थितीतल्या चार व्यक्तींचे - स्त्रियांचे - त्यांच्या मनाच्या तळघरातले विचार एकदम बाहेर

ऐकू येताएत आणि ब्लॅक आउट होतोय....

मी नाटकाच्या दिग्दर्शकाला आणि त्या चौघींना त्या क्षणी सलाम केला.

असे क्षण क्वचित येतात. असे क्षण येण्याकरता तर वर्षानुवर्षीची धडपड करायची. नाटकं

करण्याची नि पाहाण्याची.

("सावल्या" खेरीज इतर ३ नाटकंही फार छान होती. विशेष करून, "सुखी माणसाचा सदरा" ह्या

वगनाट्यावर भरपूर खिदळलो, टाळ्या शिट्ट्या वाजवल्या, (मनातल्या मनात नाचलो सुद्धा).

बाकीच्या नाटकांना कमी लेखत नाहीये. पण सावल्या बघताना भान हरपलो, तितकं नोंदवतोय.)

तर मंडळी ...

दु:ख ना आनंदही, अंत ना आरंभही

नाव आहे चालली, कालही अन आजही...

Highly enriching and creatively stimulating experience at Natya Darpan 2025 this

weekend in New Jersey. Heartiest congratulations to Ashok Chaudhary for consistently

and passionately supporting the cause of theatre for the last 10 years. Equally enjoyed

meeting old Jersey friends after almost 3 years. Lots of chats and laughs. Looking

forward to 2nd edition of Natya Darpan in NC in 2026!!!

Fantastic ensemble of various dramas handling wide ranging topics

Attended 10th yr anniversary of NatyDarpan over the weekend - fantastic ensemble of

various dramas handling wide ranging topics from mental health to light-hearted

comedy. It covered them all.

Congratulations to Ashok Chaudhary and entire natydarpan team for conceiving this

idea 10-yrs back and carrying it forward consistently and doing this diligently year after

year with able guidance from the seasoned drama/ theater personalities from US and

India and getting a lovely support from local community, media and passionate

volunteers.

Venue, weather and ambiance was superb.

Nice food, snacks with good tea breaks.

Each and every play was well executed and hats off to the respective artists, play

writers, producer/directors, performers and supporting cast.

For me, the highlight turned out to be interview of Susan Birkenheimer, a broadway

personality and Grammy and Tony nominated writer - who shared valuable nuggets of

what success and failure looks like in a theater world amidst all the fame that the

aspiring artists try to go after.

Met and mingled with so many friends after a very long time.

There are so many people whom I was not able to catch in frames but perhaps next

time.

Mesmerizing weekend at NBPAC ! Thank you so much Natya Darpan, it was a

wonderful experience to watch the power packed amazing plays, each one gave

goosebumps! I feel very lucky myself to be able to participate as a Shahir singer in the

play “Sukhi Manasacha Sadara” - the 100th play of Natya Darpan - Written and directed

by Rahul Gune, associate director - Atul Athavle.

Months of rigorous practice fulfilled with the wonderful outcome on the stage!

Theater is magic—when people come together selflessly to tell stories, those stories

touch hearts. I truly felt that magic yesterday at Natyadarpan.

Different directors, different treatments, different stories—all left a deep impact. Kudos

to the teams for such powerful performances! 

Also loved catching up and taking pictures with my past teammates from plays once

showcased at natyadarpan!
